Overcoming Burnout 101
By Comfort Umoren-Olorunnisomo
Burnout is real! Burnout is not a guarantee for success!
Burnout is what happens when you try to be a superhuman for far too long.
While it is great to work hard and smart to achieve success, it is equally important to understand and take care of your body, mind and soul. Listen to your body and mind and obey when they are asking you to take a break because when they are exhausted, you can hardly make any progress at work and with your relationships.
The Institute of Quality and Efficiency in Healthcare reports that burnout is the consequences of severe stress which is not managed. It can lead to emotional, physical and mental exhaustion as well as health conditions such as Type 2 Diabetes, Cardiovascular diseases, depression and in some cases, suicide.
Research has shown that feeling less appreciated at work, taking care of a (sick) loved one, saying YES to every request brought your way and worrying over things beyond your control among others can result in burnout.
Wondering if you are a victim of burnout? Check out these symptoms and evaluate yourself:
- Constant mental, emotional and/or physical exhaustion.
- Loss of motivation to complete everyday tasks or achieve set goals.
- Feeling of self-doubt, failure and depression
- Increased frustration, anxiety and irritability.
- Unexplained pains, tension, fatigue and/or insomnia.
- Feeling helpless, detached and defeated.
- Lack of creativity, satisfaction and sense of accomplishment.
- Forgetfulness and difficulty concentrating.
- Reduced performance at work.
